No home comforts for Rovers
Tranmere missed the chance to stretch their lead at the top of npower League One ahead of Saturday's crunch clash with promotion rivals Stevenage after being held to a goalless draw by Walsall.
In an even encounter, both sides had opportunities to take all three points as Rovers failed to win at home for a second time in four days and the Saddlers' winless streak stretched to 10 games.
Will Grigg missed a glorious opportunity to put Walsall ahead in the 17th minute after goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams gifted him the ball, but he dragged his shot wide.
Tranmere nearly punished the miss soon afterwards after Danny Holmes' cross was palmed onto his own defender by Saddlers keeper Aaron McCarey but the ball went out for a corner.
On-loan forward Jake Cassidy almost put the hosts ahead after 44 minutes when he pressurised Paul Downing into clearing the ball against his shins, but again the ball went wide.
Walsall came under further pressure in the 76th minute when Rovers skipper Andy Robinson fed Cassidy whose first-time cross was directed over the crossbar by Zoumana Bakayogo.
